HISTORY OF TEMPERAMENT DEVELOPMENT

Within each person there is a certain desire to understand oneself and one’s connection to others. As psychology continues to increase understanding of more detailed needs of individuals, psychological tests are developed to help individuals with their specific area of need. Personality Profiles are one of the areas in testing which can help individuals explore their character and temperament types. Two of these tests are The Keirsey Temperament Sorter and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

Personality profile inventories, including the KTS, have become extremely popular since the development of the MBTI. The premise that everyone is different to some degree and that there is a way to measure and evaluate these differences has a wide range of modern applications. Everyone seeks to fill that inner void they feel inside their soul, whether consciously or unconsciously, and personality profiles can be one step in the direction of discovering who we truly are as individuals. The true simple realization for personal fulfillment is that life is a gift and we all have been given different talents and interests, and that we have the opportunity to choose what we would like to do with our life. However simple this truth may be, many people do not know this and suffer great turmoil as to who they are and what they should be. To freely be who we are may be the objective, but getting there can be very elusive.

Due to the fact that many people desire to really know who they really are, the search for self has become a goal of many. Many people realize that they are different from other people and want to know why. Other reasons that may be the catalyst or this "self search" may include to fill the emptiness within, for fulfillment, meaningfulness, purposefulness, relationship, career, and self esteem issues. Several factors often influence individuals as they develop their own sense of identity. (PLACE YOUR ORDER FOR, "THE FULFILLMENT OF DOING WHAT YOU LOVE" AND SEE CHAPTER 7 FOR THE COMPLETE TEXT)

There are eight letters that identify and define, in a given order, all of the possible sixteen personality profiles. The first two possibilities are the Extravert(E) and the Introvert(I). The extravert is attracted to the outside world of people and things. The extravert has a need to be around people within an environment to socialize and interact. This social environment gives the extravert an internal charge which is reflected as sense of well being. In contrast, the introvert is more receptive to the inner world of ideas and thoughts. This includes privacy, solitary activities, and comfort in being alone. Introverts usually receive their internal boosts through this territorial nature. Extraverts and introverts can become very uncomfortable outside their given temperament. It is estimated that 75% of the general populus are E and 25% are I. These are character tendencies which means that an extravert will not exhibit extravert tendencies 100% of the time, but can fluctuate for any number of reasons.

Two additional temperaments are the Sensor(S) and the Intuitive(N). The sensor is interested in the facts, and the intuitive, what is logical. The sensor is interested in the facts, what is logical, and what past experience has demonstrated. The intuitives are more original in their thought processes, focusing on future possibilities of change and improvement. Seventy-five percent of the general population tends to be S while an estimated 25 % fall into the N group. The next temperaments are the Thinking(T) and the Feeling(F). The thinkers are prone to use logical/objective analysis contrasted by the feelers who tend to use personal values/judgements as their method of operation. The T and F have a basically 50/50 split within the general population. The last of the four categories include the Judging(J) vs. the Perceiving(P). The judger prefers organization and control over his life. Planning is a big part of a judger’s agenda. The perceiver is much more spontaneous and flexible with his outlook on how things should be handled. The J and P group also appear to have a 50/50 split within the general population. It is important to remember that these are temperament tendencies reflecting general behavior characteristics and that all individuals will fluctuate from their type in certain situations. DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALITY PROFILE

In order to make this section work most efficiently for you, it is recommended that you go to the Keirsey Web Site at www.keirsey.com take the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II (which is free) to determine your four-letter personality profile. Then return to this site to continue. Proceed through the following subjective temperament section to verify and further establish your true personality profile.

Further analysis of personality profiles is helpful in determining the traits that you do have and indications of where they could be applied. There are sixteen possible combinations of the personality types. There are four main categories from which each personality type stems. The result should be a combination of four letters, one from each of the four categories. Examples include: ENFJ, INTP, ESTJ, ISFP, and so on. Your personality type will be represented in one of four main categories: NF, NT, SJ, SP. Look over the choices and see if one of the two choices in each of the four categories appeal to you. As you do this, try putting them in to the four letter order, and see which profile you come up with. Obviously, this is just to give you an idea of what your profile might be as a starting point. It is recommended that you take a personality profile assessment through a professional testing administrator.

Listed below are four statements with each containing two possible choices. Each choice is labeled with a specific letter which represents one specific personality type. Circle the one of the two choices in each statement which best describes you.

1) E Does the outward world with contact with people and places charge your batteries?
I Does the inward world of ideas and thoughts charge your batteries?
2) S Do you prefer to work, think, and be interested in things according to facts in the present?
N Do you prefer to work, think, and be interested in things according to possibilities in the future?
3) T Do you do your decision-making through logical analysis?
F Do you do your decision-making through personal values?
4) J Do you prefer to plan things in advance, to organize and control events?
P Do you prefer to be flexible and spontaneous, observing and understanding events?

There are hundreds of different possible careers for any given personality profile. (PLACE YOUR ORDER FOR, "THE FULFILLMENT OF DOING WHAT YOU LOVE" AND SEE CHAPTER 8 & 9 FOR THE COMPLETE TEXT)

SELF-EVALUATION

The following is to help you determine more specific ideas on who you really are and what you really would like to do. You will start to discover information concerning your personality/ character traits and things that you really enjoy doing.

Do you love your work or what you spend most of your time doing?

Do you really look forward to getting out of bed each morning, excited about what is ahead for you that day?

Do you have a pleasant sense of satisfaction for each day at the end of most days?

Do you feel meaningful and fulfilled at what you do?

Do you feel that you are making a positive difference and that you are doing what you were put on this earth to do?

What are the things that you like and dislike about your current job or situation?

Is your industry or organization stable, can you count on keeping a good job?

Do you like/dislike the type of work you do?

How do you feel about your self-image in the type of work you do?

Do you have and follow your personal code of ethics (inner voice)?

What do you love to do? How can you incorporate those areas into a realistic vocational result?

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, that is what makes us human. It is easier to build on your strengths than to constantly compensate for your weaknesses. If the words used in your lists are boring, something you feel you must do regardless of want, or that you dread, those are your weaknesses. It is important to be aware of your weaknesses so they will not be stumbling blocks in the future. Your strengths are those things where you feel like you fit, which free your soul, and give you a childlike joyful feeling.

You want optimal satisfaction in your work, that is what keeps you going and energized when the going gets tough. What should you do with your newly found personal information? You will need to come up with ideas, set goals, and work toward your future focus. You will need to devise a personal, customized, realistic, and strategic plan to get there? PLANNING YOUR FUTURE

Consistent career indecision, indifference, unhappiness, and/or boredom could be signs of depression. As a depression survivor, I want you to know that it is very important to address this issue if you feel you may be suffering from depression. Please go to www.depressionscreening.org for a free confidential depression-screening test. Depression is a disease. If you believe you suffer from depression, please talk with a Pastor. If your symptoms continue, please see your doctor or a trusted medical professional.

You are the one who is ultimately responsible for making the decisions as to what material you will consider as you work on your plan of action. Use the tools that appear to be the most effective for you. Take these combinations of information about yourself and put them together in your own personal equation which reflects the real you!

Now that you know that everyone is different and that you cannot change another with your efforts, respect these differences. Because you know that everyone falls into one of sixteen profiles, you have the ability to incorporate this understanding into your relationships. If you will accept the fact that these differences are not obstacles to overcome, but opportunities to appreciate one another for who we truly are. Since we are all "wired" differently, as most temperament research indicates, from birth, acceptance of this can lead to much more harmonious relationships, nonconfronting attitudes, tremendous growth, and personal peace. If you find yourself with long-term career indecision/indifference, it would be wise to have a depression screening done by your doctor. THE PLAIN TRUTH

From a Christian point of view, the awareness of God’s unconditional love is the true satisfying factor that every heart desires, which has already been given freely to everyone. Choose to know and act upon the primary purpose for human existence: to be united in a eternal relationship with God. God’s gift to us is life. Our gift back to God is what we do with our life. For those who will choose the Christian way of life, they are on the right road to the true source happiness. Base your self worth on being one of God’s beloved children.

You have tremendous unique possibilities within you, be open to the "big picture". Discover what drives your internal energy source, what charges your batteries, and live it through good works. Fulfilling endeavors in life are important to everyone, but waiting and depending only upon them for our happiness often leads to frustration and burnout. Simply do what makes good sense each day and you will get to where you need to be when you need to be there. Develop those healthy habits which lead to prosperity and peace for all. Think of work as a privilege; a person’s purpose in work exists where his deep sense of gladness meets the world’s deep hunger! Remember, it is not so much what you accomplish and attain, it is what you learn and who you become along the way. Now go and do it! Make your dreams come true!
